W.E.B. Du Bois Society Honors Graduates

Etienne LeGrand and her husband, Hal Logan, founded the W.E.B. Du Bois Society in 2004. Du Bois was one of the most influential black leaders in the first half of the 21st century and a founder of the NAACP. Through various initiatives, the Du Bois Society recognizes and rewards high achievement among African-American students and encourages other high-potential students to improve their academic performance. This year’s W.E. B. Du Bois Scholars graduating from metro-area high schools are:

 

Brittany Flood, graduating from the Atlanta Girl's School, is head of the student government, a member of the Junior Classical League, a student ambassador and a leader in the genocide awareness program. Brittany has been on the Dean’s List for all of her years at AGS. Last year, she received an English award, a history award and the Smith College Book Award. She is also captain of the varsity basketball team and a cross-country runner. Brittany will attend the University of Virginia and study architecture and urban planning.




Zuri Hemphill, a senior at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, has a strong interest in science and mathematics and plans to pursue a career in pediatric oncology. Zuri maintained a 4.26 GPA and trained intensely in tennis and basketball.†She is a Patriot Ambassador, a member of the National Beta Club, co-president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and is a Jack and Jill of America 2007 graduate. Zuri has been named a McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean's Scholar and has won the Minority Women Engineering Scholarship. She mentors younger students, tutors her peers, and enjoys relaxing with friends. Zuri will attend Northwestern University, where she will study biomedical engineering as a pre-med major and play tennis.


Michelle McQueen
, a senior at Sequoyah High School in Cobb County, excelled in honors and advanced-placement classes.†She is a member of the Beta Club and Youth Reaching Youth, and is a peer facilitator working with special-needs kids. Michelle attends Allen Temple AME Church, where she sings in the choir and serves as parliamentarian in the church’s youth group. She also participates in the college-bound program of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta and volunteers in her local hospital’s emergency room. Michelle will attend Florida A&M University and study pharmacy.


Jeron O. Rowland, a senior at Duluth High School, excels in history, particularly history of the United States. When not studying history, he enjoys playing and watching sports, listening to music and sleeping. Jeron will attend Morehouse College.

 Fabiane Valentine, a graduating senior at the DeKalb School of the Arts, studies visual arts, technical theater and media arts. She enjoys playing the steel drum and is currently a member of the Metro Atlanta Steel Orchestra. Fabiane plans to study journalism at Georgia State University.
