"Summer Starts Here" Tours of Atlanta


With the Braves in town and the weather getting warmer there is no need to wait until June to explore the best cultural attractions in Atlanta. Atlanta Starts Here announces the first annual "Summer Starts Here" weekend on May 16-18.

The weekend features special tours, events, and rates at eight of Atlanta’s most exciting destinations: Atlanta Preservation Center, Braves Museum & Hall of Fame/Turner Field Tours, Atlanta Cyclorama, Georgia Capitol Museum, Grant Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site, Oakland Cemetery, and Zoo Atlanta.

All destinations are in close proximity to each other so plan your day to include some walking, biking, riding public transportation and eating at neighborhood restaurants. Offerings include (in alphabetical order):

  • Atlanta Preservation Center’s regular guided walking tour of the Grant Park Historic Neighborhood on Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m. is FREE. The tour includes the 1856 Grant Mansion, which is under restoration.
  • Braves Museum & Hall of Fame and Turner Field Tours is giving tour participants a free gift with a purchase of a tour ticket on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17; tours run from 9 am to 3 pm.
  • Georgia Capitol Museum is offering a FREE Special Curator’s Tour of the State Capitol on Friday, May 16, from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Grant Park Conservancy is presenting these special guided walking tours: History of Grant Park at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16; Fort Walker at 11 a.m.on Saturday, May 17; Glorious Water: Springs, Fountains, Lakes and Ponds of Grant Park at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 18; Go Native: Plants and Trees in G rant Park at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 18. Fees: $5 for Adults and $3 for seniors.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site is sponsoring a special FREE exhibition, "From Memphis to Atlanta: The Drum Major Returns Home," through Aug. 31.
  • Oakland Cemetery will be back open for tours following the March tornado. Tours will be given Sunday, May 17, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The cost is $10; $5 for students and seniors.
  • Zoo Atlanta is offering a special discount Friday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18. Visitors must say "Atlanta Starts Here" or show a coupon for the discount.
