Skin Care Tips for Fall

By Susan Soper, Executive Editor

Now that another summer of chlorine, sun and saltwater are behind us, it’s a good time to take stock of the damage done to skin, hair and nails. Atlanta-area dermatologists, spas and skin consultants emphasize the need to continue the number-one step to healthy skin: sunscreen. Overcast weather is no reason to skip proper protection; always use a sun shield with an SPF of at least 30.

Dr. Anna Pare, a dermatologist with Dermatology Consultants, has a number of suggestions during this transition time: continue to drink plenty of water, cut back on Vitamin A to minimize drying effects of topical lotions, sleep with a humidifier and exfoliate. By sloughing off the damaged skin cells properly, you are taking the first steps toward putting your best face forward.

According to Natural Body & Spa – with 11 Atlanta locations — masks are a good way to maximize the transition from summer to fall to begin the soothing and hydrating process, such as Natural Body’s Hydrating Red Algae Mask ($25), which soothes and hydrates irritated skin while reducing redness.

Fall is a good time to begin a new skin care routine to undo the effects of summer and to pump up the moisturizing products – switch from lotion-based to cream-based – for low humidity and colder weather. Natural Body Solar Facial Moisturizer is a cream based moisturizer with an SPF 30 ($35.90) as well as natural ingredients like green tea and aloe extracts.

Pare also says, remember your lips and hands – they need moisture and sun protection, too.
