Chef Joe Englebird is one of the chefs on hand for cooking demonstrations for kids and adults at the Green Market at Piedmont Park. The market will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Piedmont Park's 12th Street entrance through October.
Chef Shaun Doty is on the move again with plans to open Shaun’s at the old Inman Park Patio site on Edgewood Avenue later this summer. For those keeping score, Doty founded MidCity Cuisine, then left last year to become executive chef at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Table 1280, where he will continue as a consultant. The old Inman Park Patio space will be more intimate, with 65 seats inside and 25 on the patio. Doty’s replacement at MidCity, Nicholas Bour, resigned and may move to Washington, D.C.
Castleberry Hill’s dining options continue to expand with the opening of Elliott Street Deli & Pub at 51 Elliott St. The deli, owned by Michael Jakob, recently got its liquor license and is serving big sandwiches and salads. Baltimore Crab & Seafood at 253 Peters St. has an impressive menu, including crab cakes and various “home-style” sides like macaroni and cheese, green beans, candied yams and cabbage.
The Fifth Group’s latest creation, ecco, is open for dinner at 40 7th St. N.E. (at the corner of Cypress Street) in the old Atlanta Fencing Club building. The casual atmosphere and European-inspired menu – woodfired seafood and steaks – are under the direction of chef Micah Willix and pastry chef Gary Scarborough. (404) 816-5443.
The owners of Olive Bistro (with a location on Ponce de Leon in Midtown and formerly Little Five Points) have opened Pizza Vino at 1402 N. Highland Ave. N.E. in the space once occupied by Mambo. The restaurant serves fresh gourmet pizzas, salads, sandwiches, pastas, antipasto and domestic beers and wines. It’s open Monday through Thursday for dinner, and lunch and dinner on the weekends.
Anne Quatrano, co-owner and chef of Bacchanalia, was nominated for special recognition at the annual “Salute to Women of Achievement” luncheon by the YWCA. Quatrano’s other honors include nominations for American Express’ best chef of the Southeast in 2000, 2001 and 2002, which she won in 2003. She also received Food and Wine’s 10 best new chefs award in 1995, and represented Atlanta at the James Beard Olympic Preview in 1996.
QUICK BITES: Co-founder of Moe’s & Joe’s Tavern in Virginia-Highland, Morris “Moe” Krinsky, died April 25 from pneumonia. He and his late brother Joe opened the local favorite in 1948.... Sampan and its upstairs cocktail lounge, Suzy Wong’s, have closed on the West Side after less than two years in business.... Mick’s at Lenox Square has closed. . . . Vegetarian restaurant Lush in Poncey-Highland has reopened as Pacific Kitchen, featuring West Coast cuisine with Asian and Mexican influences.... Highland Tap in Virginia-Highland has a new chef, John Wells, creating new menus. Look for weekly wine and beer features and $5 martinis on Tuesdays.... Parisian brasserie Au Pied de Cochon in the InterContinental Buckhead has recently been awarded the North American Restaurant Association award of excellence. . . . Virginia-Highland favorite Pad Thai closed at the end of May.... Poncey-Highland tapas restaurant Pura Vida recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.... Atlanta Bread Company has opened its new concept restaurant Zaria in the Vinings Jubilee shopping center offering pizzas and pasta.... Raving Brands (Moe’s, Mama Fu’s, Planet Smoothie) has purchased the Chandler Park and Midtown locations of Flying Biscuit and plans to franchise the concept.... Doc Chey’s Asian Kitchen is celebrating its ninth birthday in Virginia-Highland.
