City Votes Against Demolition Of Crum & Forster

By Ann Boutwell

Updated July 15, 2008

The City of Atlanta's Bureau of Buildings has denied the Georgia Tech Foundation's request to demolish the Crum & Forster Building in Midtown. The city also said it would nominate the building for the National Register of Historic Places, which would give it more protected status.

Vocal opposition by residents and preservationists, an online petition that has collected thousands of signatures and a Facebook page may have also softened the Georgia Tech Foundation's approach. The organization, a 45-member board of trustees that manages gifts to the university, has said it will re-evaluate the use of the circa-1928 Crum & Forster building. The Foundation could also appeal the demolition permit denial from the city.

The Crum & Forster building, located at 771 Spring St., was purchased by The Foundation about seven months ago with an eye toward expanding Technology Square, which is just next door. However, in the demolition permit, the Foundation said it had no immediate plans for the property and would leave it as a grassy area and expand the sidewalks.

In June, the Midtown Development Review Committee voiced unanimous opposition to the Georgia Tech Foundation's request to demolish the building.
