Callanwolde's Summer Jazz On the Lawn

Callanwolde’s Jazz on the Lawn series presents special outdoor concerts featuring the finest of local jazz musicians. Including a mix of classic and contemporary jazz, swing, blues, reggae, be-bop and R&B, this popular concert series is sure to excite audiences with its high-energy performances. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a picnic and enjoy these special concerts under the stars on the beautiful grounds at Callanwolde!
May 23 at 7:30 pm Marea Alta- Smooth Latin Jazz Callanwolde Fine Arts Center opens its 2008 Jazz on the Lawn summer series with the fresh, tropical sound of Marea Alta. The band's original compositions have engaged audiences internationally. Marea Alta (high-tide) incorporates the improvisatory structure of jazz into a scheme of multiple Latin rhythms. Audiences cannot sit still while listening to this band! This performance of Jazz on the Lawn is in conjunction with the Atlanta Jazz Festival 2008.
June 13 at 7:30 pm Nick Longo Band - High Energy Jazz Originality Acclaimed saxophone artist Nick Longo and his seven-piece band will present originality in a broad variation of jazz styles. Powered by two sax musicians and a tight percussion section this dynamic band will drive a lively performance into the night.
June 27 at 7:30 pm Gwen Hughes Jazz Quartet Multiple winner of Creative Loafing’s "Best Jazz Artist" award, Gwen Hughes will rock you with her mix of elegant jazz and earthy blues. You will find many surprises hearing this unique, adventurous band!
July 18 at 7:30 pm Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship - featuring vocalist Audrey Shakir A favorite at Callanwolde, enjoy Will Scruggs’ swinging saxophone skills and energetic sounds for an unforgettable musical experience. Scruggs leads a fellowship of professional musicians and is accompanied by powerful vocalist Audrey Shakir, one of Atlanta’s greatest musical treasures in the world of jazz singing. Whether conversing in scat riffs and sax runs or singing a duet, the joy of music is palpable when these two friends get together.
August 8 at 7:30 pm Marsha DuPree Marsha’s beautifully skilled vocals of smooth classic jazz and cabaret specialties will feed your soul! A lead female singer in the Southeast, her rich musical interpretations are fluid and polished.
Tickets are sold at the door. Parking is free and on-site. $15 General Admission / $12 Students/Seniors/Members. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Callanwolde’s comfortable indoor courtyard.
