Blue Ribbon Burgers: George's

Editor’s Note: George’s has been in business in Virginia-Highland for 45 years. They must be doing something right – that’s a lot of burgers under the bridge! The Atlanta INtown staff likes to head that way after reading final page proofs, and we’ve not found much to complain about. We know from talking to G.G. Najour, who took over from his dad in the late 1980s, that burger-lovers come from Newnan, Powder Springs and even Fayetteville to chomp down on their "famous" hamburgers. So when two of our Burger Guys, in search of Blue Ribbon Burgers found the burgers, well, lacking, we couldn’t take that sitting down, so Managing Editor Collin Kelley added his own take on George’s.

 The Burger Guys’ report

We headed down to George’s for what one reader claimed to be the best burger in Atlanta. We were excited when we saw that the awning out front proclaimed “A Burger Joint” and the menu prominently displayed “George’s Famous Hamburgers.” The ambiance is great, as is the patio area out front.

We were perplexed, however, that we had a choice between a five-ounce or an eight-ounce burger. What self-respecting burger-lover would select a smaller burger just to save a buck fifty?

As usual, we went with our standard set-up: Cooked medium, with cheddar cheese.

When the burgers arrived, they looked promising – each with a nicely toasted whole-wheat bun. Upon closer inspection, the burgers themselves appeared a little too-charred, maybe even overdone. Still, we dug in.

With our fist bite, we realized they were overdone to the point of dryness; we were loading on the condiments just to add some moisture – and flavor. Don put mayo on his burger for the first time in years to try and help it out.

Collin Kelley’s report

I think the Burger Guys were having taste-bud malfunction the day they went to George’s for lunch. No flavor? Puh-leeze! I also consider myself a burger connoisseur, and George’s is by far one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

I’ve eaten there about three times in the last couple of months, and my burger has always been perfect: medium rare, juicy and full of flavor. All it needs is a little mustard and ketchup and I’m ready to chow down. I usually don’t like a whole-wheat bun on my burger, but I even like the ones at George’s.

I had a co-worker bring one back to me recently, and even after the road trip, it was still a fabulous burger.

The report from George’s

Hey, Burger Guys – come back! There’s a sign in the kitchen now: Don’t overcook!
