Green Q&A with John McIntyre

As the founder of LifeServe America, I specialize in finding green solutions for the family, home and environment.  My goal is to educate, advise and empower people to make informed choices and take action for a more sustainable life.  I want to minimize the creation of and exposure to what is not meant to be in the body, and at the same time, offer tips for making your home and work spaces more energy efficient. Below are some simple and easy ways to do this:

1. Install a programmable thermostat and set it for different temps at different times.

2. Replace high use incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps.

3. Be sure that the HVAC system is clean and operating properly, and change your air filters regularly.

4. Keep your refrigerator and freezer full, and be sure the seals are in good condition.

5. Wash full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

6. Air dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher drying cycle.

7. Turn off your computer and monitor when you are not using them.

8. Plug electronics into power strips, and turn off power strips when the TV or DVD player is not in use.

9. Take short showers instead of baths.

10. Close the fireplace damper.

11. Buy energy efficient appliances like tankless water heaters.

12. Seal and insulate your attic access.

13. Turn off all lights and fans in unoccupied rooms.

14. Use ceiling fans

15. Add insulation and radiant barrier

In the spirit of stewardship and sustainability, I encourage you all to take part in these green solutions. The long term "greening" of our communities must begin one person, one structure and one business at a time, and it is my hope to motivate and facilitate green business practices and help secure a healthier Atlanta for decades to come.
