Druid Hills Baptist Church on the corner of Ponce de Leon and N. Highland avenues in Poncey-Highland is considering turning part of its property into a mixed-use development. According to a report in Curbed Atlanta, the century-old church wants to convert a portion of the property behind the main sanctuary into retail, office space, religious facilities and multi-family residential.

The historic church, opened in 1914, would not be affected by the development, but later buildings added to the property would likely be torn down.

OK, but please don’t demolish the church. Seems absurd to even have to make that comment, but comparably fine architecture, including churches, have been demolished in Atlanta in the very recent past, and similar proposals are on the table right now at other locations.
