Moving in the Spirit honored by city council
Atlanta City Councilmember Carla Smith presented a proclamation to Moving in the Spirit in recognition of the organization’s 25 years of service to the Atlanta community. Moving in the Spirit is a dance-based youth development program that uses the art and discipline of dance to teach students life and workplace skills.
Moving in the Spirit has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. In 2005, the group was nationally recognized as an outstanding youth arts and humanities program by Coming Up Taller. Coming Up Taller supports programs that celebrate the creativity of America’s young people. Moving in the Spirit was the first in Georgia and the second organization in the southeast to receive the Coming Up Taller award.
The organization also received the 2008 Southern Innovators Award and a prestigious Youth Program Award, presented by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Most recently, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta honored Moving in the Spirit with the 2011 Managing for Excellence Award – citing its fiscal responsibility, impact, and measurable results.
“For 25 years, Moving in the Spirit has served Atlanta’s urban neighborhoods – providing community awareness of the importance of the arts in young lives,” said Councilmember Smith.
