Manuel’s Tavern to celebrate 55th anniversary

Submitted by collin on Monday, 1 August 2011No Comment

Manuel’s Tavern in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood is celebrating its 55th anniversary this week with specials and news that it’s in discussion to open not one, but two locations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. These satellite locations would be a first for the beloved watering hole.

The 55th anniversary celebration runs from Monday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 7, with low prices on select menu items throughout the week, special beers on draft, a kayak giveaway, and will pop open some special casks of Terrapin Vanilla Rye Pale Ale, made just for this event.

Opened on Aug. 6, 1956, by Manuel Maloof, then the future CEO of DeKalb County, the Tavern has become a favored spot for journalist, politicians and folks from all walks of life. The Shakespeare Tavern once held it’s shows there and Bobby Agee (who INtown profiled in our July issue — read it here) has been serving customers behind the bar for 35 of those 55 years.
