I walked into the office yesterday morning to find a table full of Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Biscuits, which the Atlanta-based company will add  to its breakfast menu on Jan. 10. Since we’re such a small staff, we asked other folks from the Inman Alley building to come over and nosh with us. The general consensus of everyone standing around eating the sandwich was that it was good. Good, but not great.

Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken BiscuitI have been a Chick-fil-A lover since my parents first took me to the original Dwarf House in Hapeville back in the 70s. If you’ve never been to the Dwarf House, get thee to the southside right now. The Chick-fil-A there tastes different than the mall and stand-alone stores. I don’t know why, it just does. And it’s better. Plus they have real french fires – not those doormat waffle fries. Don’t get me started. I digress.

Back to to the Spicy Chicken Biscuit. When you first bite into it, the cayenne pepper rub is subtle, but after chewing and swallowing a bite, the hotness lingers in the back of your throat. Those who are used to the butterflied chicken breast that comes in the sandwiches and biscuits will notice that whatever “secret” spice they normally use is barely there in favor of the cayenne rub. It’s a different Chick-fil-A experience, but not an unpleasant one. But I do have to wonder how many people will want something like this for breakfast at 7 a.m.? This is almost like a brunch item, or maybe brinner (that’s breakfast and dinner, you know).

My main issue is the biscuit. It’s too soft, a little doughy and, well, generic. I know this will make some of your heads explode, but, in my opinion, McDonald’s has a better breakfast biscuit. The Mickey D biscuit is flaky and has a bit of a crunch, which would work well with the Chick-fil-A Spicy Biscuit. If I had more time and energy, I might go buy a McDonald’s biscuit and put the Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken inside to see what it tastes like. If any of you crazy kids try that, let us know!
