Northside Hospital employees recently gave back to the community by participating in a Undergarment Drive for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children, to provide shelter clients with one of their greatest needs – underwear, diapers, socks and feminine-hygiene products. More than 100 Northside employees collected more than 2,000 items for the shelter. It was through Dr. John Neeld, an anesthesiologist at Northside for nearly 40 years, and his wife, Gail, who sits on the boards of the Atlanta Day Shelter and Northside Hospital Foundation, that Northside found out about the project and decided to get involved. www.northside.com.

Georgia Cancer Specialists and Atlanta Oncology Associates collected more than 4,000 bags in the eighth annual Totes 2 Tots suitcase drive for foster children. The program delivers new or nearly new backpacks, suitcases, duffel bags, diaper bags, and other age-appropriate bags to foster children in Georgia, many of whom must shuffle their belongings from home to home in garbage bags during frequent relocations.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has announced the appointment of Dr. Mark Wulkan as Surgeon in Chief. Wulkan has been a member of the Children’s medical staff since 1998, when he returned to the city where he attended medical school at Emory University. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Medical Center and his critical care training at the University of Pittsburgh/Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Wulkan completed his Pediatric Surgery Research and Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham/The Children’s Hospital of Alabama. In recent years, he has emerged as a rising national and international star in pediatric surgery. Wulkan established an adolescent bariatric surgery program at the Emory University School of Medicine and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at Children’s. He also has introduced the concept of minimally invasive surgery to his colleagues across disciplines including orthopaedics, cardiothoracic surgery and urology.
