Gamma KnifeStep Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes, the fundraising walks benefitting the American Diabetes Association, will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, at Grant Park and Saturday, Oct. 3, at Independence High School in Alpharetta. Northside Hospital is the first Georgia hospital to perform a new minimally invasive treatment for glaucoma that may help to slow the disease’s progression. The procedure, known as a trabeculotomy, is performed on an outpatient basis, usually takes less than 30 minutes, and is only available at Northside Hospital. www.Northside.com.

Piedmont Hospital is the first hospital in the Southeast and fourth in the nation to use the Gamma Knife, considered the “Gold Standard” in stereotactic brain radiosurgery. Gamma Knife (pictured above) surgery is credited with saving the life of 46-year-old Kim Vinings of Grant Park, who has been battling various types of cancer since age 37, culminating in 2007 with a diagnosis of brain cancer. The Gamma Knife was used on two separate occasions to successfully eradicate the lesions in Kim’s brain. www.piedmonthospital.org.

Garden View Massage in Decatur begins featuring home sessions this month. The rates will vary depending on the location of the massage, but City of Decatur residents will pay $95 per hour.
