Submitted by collin on Tuesday, 1 September 200912 Comments

holiday giftsWe need your help choosing nominees for Atlanta INtown’s Best of the Holidays 2009. Twice a week, we’ll be seeking your opinions on the best places to shop, dine, where to see incredible holiday lights, where to see the best Santa Clause and much more. From your suggestions, we’ll pick three nominees for a final vote in late October and early November. The winners will be featured in our December edition. First up: Best Place to Buy Last Minute Gifts

Your picks should be located inside the Perimeter.  Please post your comments!

Taste in Decatur never fails, neither does Heliotrope (also Decatur). Both have funny cards, gag gifts that are not crude and usable, great house stuff – all range of prices.

They’re standard, but you can find something for everyone at Lenox or Phipps. I recommend going early, late evening or during your lunch hour when its less likely to be crowded. Great for one-stop shopping.

You just can’t beat TRADERS in East Atlanta for tres cool last-minute gifts. Unique offerings in all price ranges. I’m there every year.

Junkman’s Daughter has some funky stuff.

Mint Julep on Pharr Road always has great Christmas tree decorations for the Lilly Lovers in your life and more great gift options in the new stationary and fragrance collections.

Heliotrope never fails! A stroll along Highland Ave is also a good choice: Dakota J.’s, Mitzi & Romano, Dabberdoo, The Paper Source.

Attic Treasures Thrift Shop in Chamblee across from the Chamblee Post Office. Why not be green at Christmas? Recycle and reuse! This shop sells gently used men, women and children’s clothing and household items. Proceeds benefit those in need through philanthropic programs supported by Assistance League of Atlanta.

My Brother drinks Port, my Sister-in-law likes Rieslings … I forgot to get presents and I need a beer. So I head over to Tower Beer, Wine and Spirits in Buckhead and I get all my shopping done, even if it is Christmas Eve. Buy items in a box or pick up a gift wrap bag.
I have done it it 10 minutes or less too.
Now I’m on the road again.

Heliotrope is good and if I am in East Atlanta I also like Traders. Don’t forget bookstores. A Cappella Books has both new and used and rare.

Junkmans Daughter is great if you want something edgy. I love The Paper Source in VaHi and usually spend more money on myself than on others.

Gift memberships to the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (www.thecontemporary.org). They last for a year and come with benefits like free admission to exhibitions, events and programs and a discount in the SHOP. Plus the gift is tax deductible and provides support for a local arts organizations. This = a gift for the giver, the receiver and the Contemporary!
