Midtown Eat In at Piedmont Park

Submitted by collin on Monday, 31 August 2009No Comment

picnicIt’s no secret that most schools have a small pool of money that they’re trying to stretch in several directions.  As a result of this lack of cash, cafeteria food is super processed and consequently, super unhealthy.  This poor diet can lead to later health problems for our kids.

That’s why Slow Food Atlanta is helping to put together the Midtown Eat In this Labor Day at Piedmont Park.  The picnic is one of more than 250 potlucks that will be underway nationwide to support healthier lunch options for kids in school.

All you have to do to support the cause is come out to Piedmont Park on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 7) with a picnic lunch and a sign broadcasting your support for “Real Food in Schools.”  Slow Food Atlanta will be giving away prizes to to the most fun and creative posters.

Prizes for creative signs include:

- a private tour of Serenbe Farm and lunch at the Hil
- a $75 gift certificate to Woodland Gardens
- an ice cream making class for 10 with Jake Rothschild of Jake’s Ice Cream
- an herb garden kit from Farmer D
- a dinner for 6 prepared at your home by Chef Nick Melvin from Parish
- a basket of homemade preserves from Harris and Clark

Slow Food Atlanta and other Eat In hosts hope that images of these giant picnics will be enough to awaken Congress to the need for better lunches in schools.  There is no cost to attend, and games and contests will be going on throughout the day.
